The opening festivities of the completed canal in August 1820 began in Camden. The bicentenary sees a range of commemorations this year. The presentation will explore the local political and economic drama two centuries ago, with illustrations from Regency comedy, art, literature, climate, music, rhyme, and even table decoration.

Our speaker Lester Hillman began working on canal engineering projects more than 50 years ago. His career has been in regulatory, engineering, design, heritage, public engagement and other transport interface projects, many connected with the Regent's Canal. The recipient of a number of international awards, in 2007 he was conferred a Visiting Professorship and continues to contribute to the work of several professional institutes. He has advised on canal-related film, TV, radio and international publications. He assists as a volunteer at the London Canal Museum which is on Camden's doorstep and first opened its doors to the public on 16th April 1992. He is the Academic Adviser to the Camden Tour Guides Association and is a member of CHS.
