50 years of the Fitzrovia News: the contribution of community newspapers to recording and disseminating local history: an illustrated Zoom talk by Nick Bailey, Sue Blundell and Linus Rees

The Fitzrovia News was founded 50 years ago by a group of residents who sought to portray both the history of the neighbourhood and the many current changes facing it. From the first issue in 1973, it adopted a firmly independent line and was more than willing to challenge local authorities and developers who were not acting in the community's best interests.

This talk by the three editors of the anniversary issue, will briefly describe the origins of the paper and later development, illustrate some of the leading themes and stories, and conclude with a wider discussion of the contribution of community newspapers to recording and disseminating material which later comes to be defined as 'local history'.
