We hope that the Vestry will be open so that people can look at the Fulleylove window.
Joan Fulleylove was a noted stained glass artist who designed the window in the Vestry on the north side of Hampstead Parish Church. The window commemorates Frederick William Haeffner who died at the Battle of the Somme on 9 July 1916: his parents lived in Netherhall Gardens in Hampstead and would have been fellow-parishioners with the Fulleyloves who lived in Church Row, and then in Denning Road.
Joan’s father John was a sufficiently-distinguished artist to merit an entry in the ODNB and her mother also painted watercolours. Joan studied at the Slade and then at the LCC Central School of Arts and Crafts, attending classes in stained glass run by Carl Parsons and Alfred Drury. As the Haeffner window demonstrates, Joan’s work reflects the spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement. It was probably her first commission and may have been designed in her studio at Holly Bush Steps in Hampstead. Joan was also a keen supporter of Women’s Suffrage, designing posters and banners for the cause. She went on to design many windows for churches in the 1920s and 1930s. She moved to Sussex in about 1937 and died in Switzerland in 1947.
